Reducing the Ecological Footprint of School Units

Information about the programme
The project “Reducing the Ecological Footprint of School Units” is an educational action that aims to develop sustainable practices within school units, in order to reduce the consumption of natural resources and enhance the environmental awareness of students. The programme is based on the measurement of specific indicators that allow members of the school community to understand and evaluate the impact of their activities on the environment. The ecological footprint of a school is much larger than we might imagine.

Each school consumes, among other things, energy for lighting and heating, water for cleaning and maintenance of facilities, paper and consumables for educational activities, and produces waste on a daily basis. Our goal is to create a greener and healthier learning space, to raise awareness and action for the environment and to help implement a sustainable future. By participating in the project we hope to create the conditions for a school community to become a model of ecological awareness and action.

The aim of the programme
The project aims to mobilise students, teachers and parents to understand and then reduce the ecological footprint of their school. Through measurable parameters (indicators), students will learn to observe and evaluate the environmental impact of the school community’s operations, make data-based decisions and design improvement actions that they can then transfer to their home environment.

Through this action:
● Students will learn to record, analyze, and interpret data, enhancing STEM skills and critical thinking. They will adopt sustainability practices that they can apply to their daily lives, transferring good practices to their home and community.
● Teachers will have a comprehensive monitoring and awareness tool for their students.
● Parents and the wider community will be actively involved in resource-saving activities, seeing the positive results of students’ daily actions in the school environment.

The programme focuses on four main modules:
1. Energy footprint– How can we reduce energy consumption in school?
2. Digital carbon Footprint– How can we reduce our carbon footprint?
3. Water Footprint– How much water do we use and how can we save it?
4. Waste Footprint– How can we reduce, reuse and recycle waste at school?

Each participating school will have the opportunity to measure at least one indicator
from each module and implement improvement actions. At the end of the school year, the data will
will be compared to show the progress made.

The project is implemented with the support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation
