The regional Europa Nostra Cultural Heritage Hub in Athens – Athens Heritage Hub, was established in 2022 as a result of the close cooperation between the Hellenic Society for Environment and Culture, the Municipality of Athens and Europa Nostra.
The aim of the Athens Heritage Hub is to connect heritage institutions and organisations in the geographical area of South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia). Emphasis is placed on youth participation and empowerment, approaching the protection of cultural heritage as a key process of building peace and cooperation between peoples.
In May 2023, the Athens Cultural Heritage Hub became part of the ambitious EU-funded pilot project “European Heritage Hub“, which aims to create a permanent platform bringing together heritage stakeholders and initiatives across Europe and its neighbouring countries. The European Heritage Hub pilot project seeks to bring together actors from all levels of government, from local, regional, national and European administrations. The Hub aims to address the many priority objectives of the European Union with a focus on climate action and green transition, integration, cohesion and accessibility, as well as innovation and digital transition.
Objectives and actions of the Athens Hub
Develop networking, cooperation and knowledge sharing:
As one of Europa Nostra’s regional hubs, the Athens Heritage Hub acts as a reference point for civil society organisations in the respective regions it covers. It also contributes to building community among heritage stakeholders and to addressing asymmetries in terms of competences & skills of stakeholders as well as policy on heritage issues.
The Athens Hub also contributes to enhancing the understanding of how cultural heritage can contribute to the triple transformation – towards a greener and more digital and socially cohesive society.
In order to promote transnational cooperation and multicultural understanding, networking activities are being developed by the ELLINIKI ETAIREIA Society for Environment and Cultural Heritage (e.g. Athens Conference, Workshop in Agios Lavrentios), while through the project website civil society organisations can promote their work: https://athenshub.org/network/
More information on participatory networking activities, skills development seminars and awareness raising campaigns of the Athens Heritage Hub can be found on the project website: https://athenshub.org/past-events/
