ELLINIKI ETAIRIA – Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage is the official representative of Europa Nostra in Greece.
Europa Nostra is a Pan-European Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations from 40 countries with more than 6 million members. It is the voice of civil society which works to protect the cultural and natural heritage of Europe.
Europa Nostra has been active for more than 50 years and is now recognized as the most effective cultural heritage network in Europe.
- It rewards excellence through the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage Awards – Europa Nostra Awards. With the support of ELLET and thanks to the quality of the work done by Greek restorers, Greece, along with other much larger and more populous countries, is one of the five European countries with the most awards.
- It carries out campaigns to save European Cultural Heritage. Through “Τhe 7 Most Endangered” programme, it supports valuable pieces of European cultural heritage that are in imminent danger. Parts of the Old Town of Kastoria and the Kampos of Chios are included in the programme.
- It contributes to shaping European heritage strategies and policies through the European Heritage Alliance 3 platform.
Costa Carras, Founder of ELLET, has been Vice President of Europa Nostra from 1976 to 2020. Alekos Kairis is a member of the Executive Committee and Fani Mallouchou-Tufano is a member of the Council of Europa Nostra. Alexandra Mamalinga-Prokopiou, member of the BoD of ELLET, represents it at the Europa Nostra Council.
